Sari Widman swears that her current project, which involves redrawing all the packaging in her house, is quite charming, and I have no choice but to agree with her. It’s also quite surreal, a bit crazy, and a whole lot of fun, too.
Snip from her site:
I was sick of looking at the utilitarian goods that cluttered my home, only to see dull and hideous packaging staring back at me with its beady little eyes. After browsing some weird and wonderful Japanese packaging, I decided to do what corporate America will not: create fun and visually interesting labels without thought to marketing, sales, or sense. Because who wants a label that’s actually relevant to the product when you can have non-sequiter and fun?

I’ve fallen in love with the wonderfully-surreal art of Kevin Titzer, an artist from Evansville, Indiana, now based in Quebec, Canada. He says that most of his works are carved from found wood, and recycled materials. Titzer also curates themed art shows, which derive inspiration from songs of music artists like They Might Be Giants and The Pixies.
Titzer has an ongoing exhibition “Ghost of a Chance,” at the Thinkspace Art Gallery in Culver City, CA. This fantastic show, which began on May 21st, will be soon be ending on June 4th.
Check out more images, and a promo video for the exhibition, after the jump.
There is a common thread that runs in artist Soo Kim’s paintings and illustrations. The characters that inhabit the imaginary world in her paintings, are always in constant, but silent interaction with themselves, each other and their surroundings.
Though her works are rich with symbolism, they are not weighed down by it. Each piece is a frozen snapshot of a moment, that has a subtle, yet dynamic narrative quality to it. As she says, “They depict the subtle unspoken communications and connections that can occur in a single instant.”
The surreal music video for Dancing Pigeons’ “Ritalin” was directed by Tomas Mankovsky. Most of the footage in the video was shot with a using a high-speed Phantom camera, at speeds ranging from 400 to a 1000 fps.
Tomas Mankovsky’s new video “Ritalin” for Dancing Pigeons as part of Diesel:U:Music, is a foreboding yet strangely humorous depiction of a seemingly pointless modern day sword fight.
“Duels fascinate me. It used to be a popular thing, but in modern days it has died out. So I thought that probably somewhere in the States, some hillbillies are still doing it, their way.”
Mankovsky has created an aggressive, yet beautiful piece relying on the preconceptions and fears that surround the culture of the stereotypical American rednecks.
This music video was made for Sak Tzevul (lightning), a Mexican progressive rock band. The surreal visuals were shot in Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico. The state, though blessed with great natural beauty, is rapidly being devastated by large scale deforestation and insurgency.
The moving images were projected during the band’s live performance, at a show organized by the government of the state of Chiapas.
Frank Beltrán, who put together the entire film, derived inspiration from the mindboggling visual techniques used by Flickr user Sebastian Perez Duarte.
